About the Event
The Bishop's Lodge remodel luncheon has been postponed.
Mr. Skinner will present on Architect Jakov Tchernykov’s “Architectural Fantasies” published in 1933, stands as an essential document of Russian Constructivist theory, illustration and book design. In his lifetime Tchernykov was known primarily for design of factories and industrial buildings but though few of his works survive, his theoretical and pedagogical works persist and his reputation grows as a master of imagination and graphic achievement on a par with Piranesi. This presentation emphasizes the graphics, produced with the ruler, triangle and French curve- quaint instruments in our time. But this architect’s prolific geometries, brilliant and dense, show that it is the human mind that is truly fecund and tools are merely the means. I will place Tchernykov among his constructivist peers including Malevitch and Popova and then extract some themes in subject matter and graphic style from the myriad illustrations in the book. 1 LU
